According to the co-coordinator of the Weed and Seed program at Warren City Tina Milner, these kids are being given the opportunity to interact in a sport that they would not have been able to try otherwise and this is a very proud moment for all those involved with the Weed and Seed program.

Sean Gordon, who is heading the program, added that the kids are learning self-discipline, self-confidence as well as self-esteem thanks to the program and at the moment, they are working on how to defend themselves if someone grabbed hold of them. The leaders of the program added that the local kids get plenty of opportunity to participate in programs such as baseball, soccer and basketball but the Police Athletic League wanted the kids to branch out in some non-traditional manner and there is nothing better in that respect than karate.

This would also help the kids who do not come from the wealthiest of families to focus on their classroom activities and according to Tina Milner, they took this opportunity to help the kids suffering from ADHD to improve their grades in class and sought the aid of the local police department who readily agreed to take up the program.

A recent study also showed that the martial arts forms taekwondo and karate helped people who suffer from ADHD and that was one of the main reasons for choosing the martial arts form for the program and Sensei Gordon is also happy in being able to help these kids.

History of Karate

The history of this martial art is uncertain and not much is known about how it all began all those hundreds and hundreds of years ago.  Most historians agree that the first Karate school was opened in the fifth-century BC, supposedly formed follwing the arrival of Bodhidharma.

Many people say that the Karate started in Japan but the roots of this martial art have also been found in China. Of course, nowadays Karate is not limited to just Japan but taught in many countries all over the world, with experrts from each country competing at the World Championships and the Olympics.

In the history of Karate, there have been many great fighters who developed their own fighting styles, which is why, since starting out over 25 centuries ago, so different Karate styles exist. You too can also develop your own Karate style!
