Martial arts is a great thing for a parent to get their kids into. I’ve grown a lot in martial arts. A couple sparing pointers (not really for a beginner, but whatever)
Keep your guard in.
Keep your eyes always on your opponent.
Don’t telegraph your moves, don’t twitch beforehand.
Set up a pattern, then break it. get your opponent to expect something, then change it up.
